One fine day in 2006, shopkeeper Mr. Rajesh Kumar Sharma spotted a few children playing in the dirt as he walked towards Yamuna Bank metro station. Their families were poor to send them to school. Moreover these children had no ID cards or birth certificates to avail government schemes.
Together with Laxmi Chandra, a post graduate Science teacher, Mr. Kumar had decided to teach these children, the basics in reading and writing, along with general subjects. Starting with two children 10 years ago, Mr. Rajesh Kumar and Mr. Laxmi Chandra have come a long way. The school under the bridge in Shakarpur now has over 200 children between the age group of 3 and 16 years.
Since the summer of 2014, the condition of the school had started to improve. Three more volunteer teachers had started coming every Saturday and another teacher extended his services on daily basis. Through named and unnamed donors and volunteers the situation for the children studying in this school has started improving with time.
Beginning in the middle of September 2015, the school got its permanent concrete flooring for the children to sit and learn. Some people have contributed new big mats on which these children can sit down comfortably. New sweaters, caps, shoes, books, pencils and school bags have also been contributed by different individuals. A mobile toilet for the girls has been set up recently.
